Overfishing is the biggest threat our oceans face today. With over 70% of all commercial fish stocks overexploited, overfished or depleted, choosing sustainable seafood is more important than ever. Although most consumers want to make sustainable choices, the world of seafood is ever-changing and can be confusing.

The Ocean Wise program was created in 2005 with goal of educating and empowering consumers with the confidence to choose sustainable seafood. We work directly with our partners like Duso’s Fresh Pasta and Sauces to ensure that they have the most current scientific information regarding seafood so that they can make sustainable buying decisions. Ocean Wise places our symbol next to seafood items which are the Vancouver Aquarium’s assurance of an ocean-friendly option.

An Ocean Wise recommended species is:

  1. Abundant and resilient to fishing pressure
  2. Well-managed based on current scientific research
  3. Harvested in a way that minimizes by catch
  4. Harvested in a way that minimizes habitat and ecosystem damage

Ocean Wise does the research behind seafood so that you don’t have to. We make it easy for consumers to make sustainable seafood choices that ensure the health of our oceans for generations to come.
